The aim of Edinburgh Young Musicians is to help all children to enjoy music, and to realise their individual musical potential, whatever that may be.

Edinburgh Young Musicians runs Saturday Morning Music Classes during school term time, providing group musical tuition for schoolchildren and for children in their final pre-school year. There is no upper age limit, although currently the oldest children are aged 17.

Depending on their age, children can attend classes in

musical play
musical workshop
recorder
violin
viola
cello
chamber music
choir
string orchestra
theory and aural

Although all teaching is done in groups, children are encouraged to take individual instrumental lessons outwith EYM where this is appropriate. In addition to employing teaching staff, EYM also employs assistants to help with many of the classes - usually students or senior pupils.

All classes take place at James Gillespie's High School which is situated in Marchmont, about a mile to the south of Edinburgh City Centre. As well as using teaching rooms, mainly within the music department, Edinburgh Young Musicians also has the use of the staff room which is available as a waiting room for parents and children and which also houses a self-service coffee shop, organised by parents. The school hall is used on an occasional basis for concerts.

Edinburgh Young Musicians is a Recognised Scottish Charity No. SCO33153.
